The Islands and Coastal Plains are located in the North. 72 Caribbean islands lie off Venezuela's 2,800km of coastline. Off the North coast, lie numerous Caribbean Islands and archipelagos, of which the biggest is Isle Margarita, La Blanquilla, La Tortuga, Los Roques, and Los Monjes and several peninsulas, including the head-shaped Paraguaná in Northwest and, in Northeast, Araya and Paria, the latter, a finger land pointing at Trinidad.
Stretching 32km north to south and 67km east to west, Isla Margarita covers an area of 920km² and is Venezuela's largest Caribbean island. The sand bar and its surroundings, which comprise mangroves, salt-flats and a lagoon, are now the Laguna de la Restinga National Park.
Three major river basins between the high mountains and lower plateaus, dominate South America. They are the Orinoco River basin, the Amazon River basin and the Parana Paraguay River. Tributaries of the Orinoco River primarily drain the largest areas of lower land in Colombia and Venezuela.
The Venezuelan drainage system consists almost entirely of two watersheds.
A. The largest flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.
B. The Caribbean Sea.
