Climate

All the Northern of South America countries lie within the tropics. A tropical cyclone is a meteorological term for a storm system characterized by a low pressure system center and thunderstorms that produces strong wind and flooding rain. A tropical cyclone feeds on the heat released when moist air rises and the water vapor it contains condenses. They are fueled by a different heat mechanism than other cyclonic windstorms such as nor'easters, European windstorms, and polar lows, leading to their classification as "warm core" storm systems. Like all tropical countries, Venezuela only has two seasons, the dry season, known as Verano, and the rainy season, known as Invierno, which are marked by the difference in rainfall rather than temperature. Generally, the dry season is from December to April/May, and the rainy season lasts for the rest of the year. Rainfall, however, can occur during the dry season, and the rainy season often has dry months.

Therefore, there are variations in Venezuela climate because of certain factors such as topography, altitude and the intensity and direction of prevailing winds. Thus Venezuela climate ranges from pine to tropical humid, even though the country is located completely within the tropical temperate zone.

Temperatures fluctuate little throughout the year, but drier periods and seasons increase in length and severity away from the equator. The temperature drops with altitude. Elevation, however, produces significant local differences in temperature, precipitation, and vegetation. More than nine-tenths of Venezuela has a mean annual temperature above 24 °C. The average mean temperature for Caracas, lying in a high valley, is about 22 °C, whereas the nearby port of La Guaira averages some 27 °C. Mérida, at more than 1,500 meters, averages 66 19 °C, while low-lying Maracaibo, at sea level, averages 28 °C.

At concise, the climate in Venezuela is separated into 4 temperate zones:

  • The climate of Venezuela falls under the tropical zone below 800 meters, where the average temperature remains between 26 and 28 °C.
  • The climatic zone in Venezuela between 800 to 200 meters is known as the temperate zone in which, the average temperature remains between "12 to 25 °C". Most of the cities of Venezuela lie in this zone.
  • At altitudes between 2000 and 3000 meters, the climate gets colder, with the average temperature ranging from 9 to 11 °C.
In the high mountainous region above 3000 meters, snow fields and grasslands are found. The average temperature here falls below 8°C.
