The Watersheds of Nicaragua are 21. Of these, 13 flow into the side of the Caribbean Sea, covering an area estimated at 117420 km ², nearly 90% of the national territory. The other 8 basins draining into the side of the Pacific Ocean, covering an estimated area of 12183 km ² approximately 10% of the national territory.

Nicaragua, with regard to transboundary basins, shares hidrográficamente the following basins: Black River (side of the Pacific Ocean) and Coco River Basin (slope of the Caribbean Sea), with the Republic of Honduras. The international basin largest Central America: basin of the San Juan River (slope of the Caribbean Sea) with the Republic of Costa Rica.

The rivers of the Pacific slope are generally short-haul. In contrast, those who drain in the Caribbean Sea are longer and extensive drainage basin. Among the basins of great importance for the country, we have the Coco River, Grande de Matagalpa and the San Juan River, which fall under the subbasins of Lake Managua (Xolotlan) and Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca).
