Floods

Flood is a natural feature, which regularly brings disruption and damage to different parts of the world. Floods vary in scale from water running off a saturated hillside to large rivers bursting their banks. The impacts of floods range from waterlogged fields and blocked roads to widespread inundation of houses and commercial property and, occasionally, loss of life. The consequences can be enormous.

Floods cause loss of life and damage to structures, crops, land, flood control structures, roads, and utilities. Floods also cause erosion and landslides, and can transport debris and toxic products that cause secondary damage.

The term "flood" is a general or temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of normally dry land areas from overflow of inland or tidal waters or from the unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source.

Flooding and flash flooding are the deadliest of natural disasters. Floodwaters claim thousands of lives every year and render millions homeless. One of the more frightening things about flooding is that it can occur nearly anywhere, at any time. It can result from excess water jams on rivers, even moderate rain, or a single very heavy downpour as it occurred in Himachal Pradesh recently.

Flooding typically results from large-scale weather systems generating prolonged rainfall or on-shore winds. Other causes of flooding include locally intense thunderstorms, snowmelt, ice jams, and dam or levee failures.

Flood in Venezuela

Flooding continues in Venezuela. In the southwestern province of Apure, approximately 10,000 people were evacuated to neighbouring municipalities and are now staying with relatives, neighbours or in temporary shelters. Over 8,300 people are being housed in shelters. Weather reports indicate that the situation is likely to worsen as the rainy period continues. This is one of the reports related to the one of the most important flood event taken place in Venezuela.
